3 Steps to Get Back on Track for 2017

The year is almost halfway over. Hard to believe, I know. Insert a joke here about still writing 2016 on my checks (as if writing checks were still a thing). And we’re hitting that mid-year slump. Half the year’s over, half the year’s ahead of us, and the weather is so nice and don’t we all want to be on vacation?
It’s time to do a halfway point check-in with yourself. Don’t get too distracted by sun and sand, or that realization that the year is half over and you didn’t manage to learn how to speak Portuguese, or go to the gym four times a week. Instead, think about the months ahead and take the time to re-orient yourself and get back on track.
Business and branding isn’t any different. Maybe you missed a certain goal, or aren’t seeing the ROI on a campaign that you were hoping to see. Things don’t always go as planned. We can learn from those hiccups though, and we can take a deep breath, refresh and restart. Mid-June resolutions can be the new New Year’s resolution.
Here are three principles to guide you to realizing your goals in 2017:
A driving principle in self-help and marketing and a million other avenues of life is the Principle of Commitment and Consistency. The theory says that people will work to stay committed and consistent, even when it might not be the most logical choice . Verbally tell people you’re going on a diet, and you’ll go on a diet. Announce on Facebook that you’re going to adopt a dog, and you’ll adopt a dog.
Elon Musk isn’t a stranger to this idea either. Musk once said, “I say something, and then it usually happens. Maybe not on schedule, but it usually happens.” It’s a mentality you can take in realigning yourself for the second half of 2017. I’m going to increase revenue. I’m going to take that two-week vacation and not do any work. I’m going to focus on positivity. Say it to yourself, say it to someone else; just verbally take that moment to commit to your goals in a meaningful and tangible way. And as you work to focus on positivity, it is amazing how the world around you evolves into a more positive place.
David Ogilvy was undoubtedly one of the great leaders in the world of advertising. In fact, his book Confessions of an Advertising Man is currently making the rounds here at Woden. One of Ogilvy’s commandments is “You should never settle, and you should always aim high.” Just because you haven’t made those January resolutions a reality, doesn’t mean you should give up or feel like a failure. Try to do better, try to make yourself better, aim higher and dream bigger, until you finally hit that goal.
If you feel like you’re halfway there, but you’re backsliding or can’t seem to improve further, that doesn’t mean just give up. Evaluate what went awry, and set a new goal for yourself. Good enough isn’t good enough if you’re looking to really achieve something this year that you can reflect back on with pride.
Be Confident & Accept Support
It seems like an obvious one, but confidence isn’t just about believing in yourself. It’s about embracing the world around you, knowing when to step up to the plate, when to ask for help, and being comfortable enough to try something even when you think you might fail. Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg offers some great advice on that front. Sandberg says, “We hold ourselves back in ways both big and small, by lacking self-confidence, by not raising our hands, and by pulling back when we should be leaning in.” Confidence isn’t purely about believing in yourself, it’s about finding ways to move forward when we’re unsure and don’t want to appear uninformed. It’s okay to ask questions, ask for help, and take cues from other people.
In other words, believe enough in yourself to know it’s okay to falter and it’s okay to need support structures to realize your goals. Getting there with some assistance doesn’t take away from your achievements; it adds to them.
It’s summer. The year’s half over. We made it this far. Enjoy the rest of your year, try to make some great things happen, and don’t stress too much about the little stuff. Devote yourself to things that truly inspire you and fill you with excitement.
When you are passionate, you’re having a positive impact: on the work you’re doing, the life you’re living, and the people who surround you inside and outside of work. Be passionate about what you do, and what you resolve to do.
Steve Jobs once said, “You have to be burning with an idea, or a problem, or a wrong that you want to right. If you’re not passionate enough from the start, you’ll never stick it out.” The biggest secret to keeping those resolutions is actually caring enough to not be able to give up until you’ve achieved that goal, whatever it might be.
